American Icons

Two American icons come together at the National Mall Pow wow to celebrate the grand opening of the Smithsonian museum of the American Indian.

Being of Iroquois and Abenaki stock myself, a few years ago when the Smithsonian Museum was holding a national celebration to mark the opening of the Museum of the American Indian, I took my son and wife to the celebration. The experience was second only to the election of Barack Obama to the presidency on the personal thrill scale. I captured about a dozen very memorable images that weekend. This image, entitled American Icons began as a shot of two tribal leaders sharing a quiet conversation before the Grand March. Ultimately I stripped it down to its bare essentials two magnificent headdresses and the Washington Monument.
