Artist's Description

Our Time Comes

Shortly before his death my father revealed to me that our family roots were Abenaki and Iroquois. He sensed that I had an affinity for Native people that I could not explain but had become a powerful force in my life as I got older. He had promised his father that he would hide his Indian roots because of the discrimination against Indian people that he had endured growing up. His mother - an Abenaki woman and his father an Iroquois man, had been raised in an orphanage in Saint Francis, Quebec. Both had suffered mistreatment in Canada's infamous Indian school systems. My father was torn between his promise - and the need to help me understand the forces that had been tugging at me for all my life. After his death in 2001, I sought out my old friends Jim and Rick West. Both were Cheyenne and deeply steeped in their culture. They helped me find my way to my native spiritual roots. They also invited me to bring my family to the opening of the Smithsonian Museum...
