Description
Seeking the Wolf Tree, Bryce Canyon National Park
Title based on a wonderful children's book written by a researcher at Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest in the town where I live these days. "Seeking the Wolf Tree", written by Natalie Cleavitt, a research associate at Cornell University and vegetation survey coordinator at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, and illustrated by Marjorie Leggitt, an artist from Boulder, Colorado, is a story for upper elementary students about an adventure two students take through the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest. It communicates core ideas related to the nature of science as well as energy flow and cycling of matter in ecosystems, and is a wonderful introduction to a unit on ecology. The folks at Hubbard Brook suggest reading the book at the beginning of the year and using it as a platform for ecological concepts from which to refer back to throughout the school year. Seeking the Wolf Tree is part of the LTER Schoolyard Series of books.

Wayne D. King’s images are a celebration of life, blending the real and the surreal to achieve a sense of place or time that reaches beyond the moment into a dreamlike quintessentialism designed to spark an emotional response. Using digital enhancement, handcrafting, painting, and sometimes even straight photography, King seeks to take the viewer to a place that is beyond simple truth to where truth meets passion, hope and dreams.
