Dancers enter the arena in the "Grand Entry" at the Schemitzun Pow Wow in Connecticut. Dancing to remember the proud heritage of more than 570 tribes from all over the Americas. This piece is particularly special to me. I especially love the muted colors of the sea of dancers in the background. However, most importantly because it tells an important set of stories of the Native people of the Americas.
Behind the young dancer and to the left you will see a young boy watching him. He appears to be a young African American boy, possibly a member of the Seminole nation. Many slaves escaped over the years of slavery and found protection and a home among the Seminole, a tribe that formed from the remnants of several other tribes during the colonial genocide of native people. Because the Florida Everglades was a particularly dangerous and challenging environment, the Seminole remain today the only tribe that never surrendered to the US Army. Aside from the story of the Seminole, the image tells another story from the early years of the Colonial occupation era. The story that is often emphasized in history books was of a gradual movement of people from tribal culture to the colonial culture. However, life in the colonies was not easy for most people and it was just as likely for people to move from colonial to native villages. In fact, scholars continue to debate in which direction the migration between colonial villages and tribal villages was greater. The net result is that a gathering of Native American Indians - especially at a large Powwow like Schemitzum - looks like the beautiful tapestry of skin colors that many of us dream of for our country.
There are so many lessons that we all can learn from each other if only we are willing to listen to one another and be a bit more gentle with one another's hearts.

Wayne D. King’s images are a celebration of life, blending the real and the surreal to achieve a sense of place or time that reaches beyond the moment into a dreamlike quintessentialism designed to spark an emotional response. Using digital enhancement, handcrafting, painting, and sometimes even straight photography, King seeks to take the viewer to a place that is beyond simple truth to where truth meets passion, hope and dreams.
