Photographed in Kayar, Senegal. Too many people are bombarded with images of children in crisis in Africa. I do not intend to minimize those crisis but the vast majority of children in Africa live very happy lives. These children in Kayar are mugging for the camera and the two ladies behind them are getting a kick out of watching the whole scene. One of the most important lessons I learned from the start of my work in West Africa was to ditch all the generalities that we Westerners have of life in Africa. My dear, late, friend Chidi Nwachukwu disabused us of those "prejudices' right from the beginning. He told us to understand that his life, growing up in rural Nigeria was very happy and he often traveled there in his mind to find his happy place.
