What most people know as the Battle of Little Bighorn is known to the Lakota (Sioux), the Cheyenne and the Arapaho as the Battle of Greasy Grass. The three nations joined together for what was to be the final major battle of the so-called "Indian Wars". These three nations called the river the Greasy Grass because of the greasy character of the grass surrounding the river where herds of Buffalo would graze and rest.
As the grandson of a man born of Iroquois and Abenaki lineage, I have always seen the battle of Greasy Grass as an important touchstone in American history. I view Custer himself with nothing but contempt, but the soldiers under his command and the many Native American warriors who were lost in this battle were all victims in an effort to eliminate the indigenous people of the Americas; people who were fighting for an "America" built on their own vision.
Custer, was a man who believed himself to be above the law and the norms of warfare, often ignoring orders in his zeal to exterminate the Indian people. His arrogance and racism were responsible for attacks on these three nations on several occasions prior to Greasy Grass, where women and children were massacred without mercy and even Indian leaders flying the American Flag beside their Teepees were mown down.
We can not reverse the facts and flow of history but there is much that we could still do to heal the wounds of the genocide inflicted on Native American people by colonial and American forces.

Wayne D. King’s images are a celebration of life, blending the real and the surreal to achieve a sense of place or time that reaches beyond the moment into a dreamlike quintessentialism designed to spark an emotional response. Using digital enhancement, handcrafting, painting, and sometimes even straight photography, King seeks to take the viewer to a place that is beyond simple truth to where truth meets passion, hope and dreams.
