Title based on a wonderful children's book written by a researcher at Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest in the town where I live these days. "Seeking the Wolf Tree", written by Natalie Cleavitt, a research associate at Cornell University and vegetation survey coordinator at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, and illustrated by Marjorie Leggitt, an artist from Boulder, Colorado, is a story for upper elementary students about an adventure two students take through the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest. It communicates core ideas related to the nature of science as well as energy flow and cycling of matter in ecosystems, and is a wonderful introduction to a unit on ecology. The folks at Hubbard Brook suggest reading the book at the beginning of the year and using it as a platform for ecological concepts from which to refer back to throughout the school year.
